USS Los Angeles, tied up next to USS Yorktown at Pier E, Long Beach California 1961

The history of the Yorktown is written by the men who sail her.

It is the sweating boatswain as he heaves a line late at night, it is the exhausted airman who, after hours on the flight deck, slumps in some corner of the island to find what sleep he can; it is the gunner, the cook, the fireman, and the baker.

It is they who give life to the Yorktown as she stands ever ready.
